How to Create a Windows Password Reset Disk

Adding a password to your user account in Windows will add security to your account especially when you don’t want others to view or copy your files or change your desktop look without your permission. Your password should never be shared to anyone so that you are the only one who can access your account, but of course except for some valid reason that you have to share it to someone else. You should create your Windows password reset disk so that when you forgot your password you can always gain access to your account and be able to reset your password and create a new password for your account.

To create a password reset disk you need a floppy disk or a USB flash disk. Note that when creating a password reset disk you must be logged in to the user account that you want to create a password reset disk. Always store your reset disk in a safe location, anyone can reset your account if they have access on your password reset disk.

This tutorial applies to Windows xp, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 you can access create password reset disk by:

WINDOWS XP – Click on START > CONTROL PANEL when control panel open double click on the user account you wish to create the password reset disk. On the upper left portion of the User Account panel Click on “Prevent a forgotten password”.

WINDOWS VISTA – Click on START > CONTROL PANEL when control panel open double click on the User Accounts. On the upper left portion of the User Account panel Click on “Create a password reset disk”.

WINDOWS 7 – Click on START > on the “Search programs and files” type password reset, when the search result shows up click on “Create password reset disk”.

WINDOWS 8 – On the Desktop screen point your mouse at the extreme lower right side of the desktop screen then click on “settings” > “control panel” > “User Accounts and Family Safety” then click on “User Accounts”

Creating the Windows Password Reset disk

When you click on “Create a password reset disk” a welcome screen appears. Click on the Next button to continue.

You will be ask which USB Flash Disk or Floppy disk to use, if you have more than one USB Flash disk connected on your computer they will all be shown here. Choose which one to use and click on the next button.

Enter the password of the account you are currently logged-in in the “current user account password” box and click on the Next button to continue.

The Forgotten Password Wizard will then create a file “userkey.psw” in your USB Flash disk or Floppy drive. You can browse the file located at the root directory of your USB Flash disk or Floppy disk to confirm the file is there and click on the Next button

The Forgotten Password has completed, click on Finish button to close the wizard. Label the media and copy the file in safe place or secure your USB Flash disk or Floppy disk in the event that you need to reset your windows password.
