How to Create, Format and Delete a Hard Drive Partition
So you buy a new hard disk drive and want to install it on your computer as an additional drive, you powered on your computer, the BIOS detected your new hard drive as shown on the Power-On-Self-Test (P.O.S.T) and the computer continue to load Windows. Then when you open the “My Computer” to see your new hard drive but your new hard drive isn’t listed on the “My Computer” Hard disk drives list.
Before you can use your new hard disk drive (HDD) you have to partition your new HDD and format it before it will be showed on the My Computer hard disk drive list and be usable.

Creating a partition and formatting it in Windows.
- Before you are able to create partition and format a hard disk drive be sure you have installed a new hard drive or deleted a partition, external hard drive such as USB external Drives also apply to this tutorial.
To Partition A Hard Disk Drive
1. If you are using Windows 7, click on Start >> right click My Computer and click on Manage, on the left pane under Computer Management click on Disk Management. You can also choose to type Disk management at the Start “Search programs and files” box and clicking on the Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions. In Windows 8 Click on Start and select the Control Panel option, if the control panel is in Category view select large icons located on the upper right corner of the control panel, then click the Administrative tools, Under the Administrative Tools double click on Computer Management.
- Under the Disk Management tools a list of all drives on your computer will be listed including those that are not yet partitioned or formatted. As you can see on the disk management tools there are two disk drives, this are Disk 0 and Disk 1, Disk 0 is were Windows is installed and disk 1 is my un-partitioned drive, I used an external hard disk drive in this example.
- To partition an un-partitioned hard drive, right click on the disk that says Unallocated, a menu will come up, click on New Simple Volume option.
- You will now be prompted with the New Simple Volume Wizard Click on Next, you will be prompted with the Specify Volume Size. In here you will be ask on how much unallocated space you want to assign for a particular partition, if you want to create more than one partition you can instead use half of the entire hard drive unallocated space, In my example I have a 80GB drive so if I want to have two partition I can assign 50000Mb for the first partition and the rest remaining unallocated space would be for the other partition. Whatever space you would like to assign on any partition that would be all up to you just enter the size in Megabytes (MB) for example for 50GB hard drive space you have to enter 50000 on the box. Click on next when you’re done.
- On the next screen you’ll be prompted on what drive letter or path to assign on your new partition you can just click on next button and accept the default value or select an available drive letter to assign on the drive by clicking on the inverted triangle dropdown option, all available drive letter will be shown you can select any of the drive letter you want. You can also choose not to assign drive letter on the new partition but your new partition will be hidden or will not be shown on the Hard disk drives list in “My Computer” until you assign a drive letter to it. Click on the next button when you’re done.
- You will now be prompted to format your new partition, click on next to accept the default value. Select NTFS file system for large hard drives, if you plan on copying large file size larger than 2GB I would recommend using the NTFS file system as a default. Leave the allocation unit size in default, also change the volume label to whatever you want but make it short, volume label will be shown when you view your partition on the “My Computer” hard disk drive list. Click on next when you’re done.
- On the next screen you’ll be prompted with the summary of what to do, review it and if everything is ok then all you have to do is to just click on the next button and wait for a while for the New Simple Volume Wizard to complete. Click on Back button if you want to change something and Next to complete the process.
How to Delete a Partition in Windows
If you want to merge two or more partition to a just one single partition to gain more space then deleting a partition is the first step to do, always remember that deleting a partition will remove or erase all the partition content so be sure to backup all of your important data on that partition before deleting the partition.

2. Under the Disk Management Window, right click on the partition you would like to delete and select delete volume. A Delete Simple Volume Dialogue box will appear asking you to confirm the deletion, click on the Yes button to delete the partition or Noto cancel the operation
